Jeff Nichols is a filmmaker that earns all the respect film fans have given him. Though he may not have directed a Marvel film or a ‘Fast & Furious’ blockbuster, making him a household name, Nichols’ filmography has made him one of the best filmmakers around. And it appears that his next film, “Yankee Comandante,” might just be the thing that pushes him into A-list territory.
According to Variety, Nichols is set to write and direct a new film titled “Yankee Comandante,” with Oscar-nominated actor Adam Driver set to lead the cast. The film is based on David Grann’s New Yorker article about an Ohio man that attained the rank of comandante during the Cuban Revolution, alongside his colleague, Che Guevara.
This isn’t the first time that Driver and Nichols teamed up for a film. The duo previously worked together in the underrated sci-fi film, “Midnight Special,” which also starred Michael Shannon. Before that Nichols also helmed the film “Take Shelter,” which we recently discussed at length for its very timely story about a potential existential threat. Most recently, however, Nichols released the 2016 film, “Loving.”

Driver, of course, has been one of the biggest actors on the planet over the past few years, headlining the most recent “Star Wars” films (some would say he gave the best performance in the new trilogy). He also earned an Oscar nomination for his work in last year’s “Marriage Story” (which spawned a million memes). Driver also starred in recent films such as “The Report” and “BlacKkKlansman.” He’s next scheduled to appear in Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” opposite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
There’s no release date set for “Yankee Comandante.” However, with the pandemic throwing production schedules into chaos, the report claims that Nichols’ new filmi will begin filming sometime in early 2021.
