Academy Announces March 2023 Oscars Date

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2023 calendar for the 95th Academy Awards and, in something of a surprise, the Oscars are staying in March. Along with ABC, AMPAS revealed that the Oscars will take place on March 12, 2023. That’s still effectively two weeks earlier than this year’s ceremony which was held on March 27, 2023.

Beginning in 2004, the Academy moved the telecast to February except in years when the Winter Olympics conflicted with the schedule. Looking to increase ratings and shorten the awards season calendar, the Academy moved the 2020 ceremony to the second Sunday of the month, Feb. 9 with a plan to keep it that way moving forward (again, Olympics years, notwithstanding). The COVID pandemic dramatically affected that schedule with the 2021 Oscars held on April 25 and this year’s ceremony moving a month earlier to the aforementioned, March 27. One assumes ABC and AMPAS will at least return to a late February date for 2024.

Notably, AMPAS also announced that the Governors Awards will return to its fall slot with a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022. Other key dates include the Oscars Shortlists on Dec. 21, 2022, nomination voting between Jan. 12 and Jan 17 (a week later than pre-pandemic), and the Oscar nominations announcement on January 24, 2023.

Notably, the nominations announcement will conflict with the 2023 Sundance Film Festival (Jan 19-29) and the Oscars itself will take place on the first weekend of the film portion of the 2023 SXSW (March 10-March 19).

Still to be determined is who will produce the 95th Oscars and who will host. More importantly, the Academy needs to find a new CEO and President as Dawn Hudson will be leaving before the end of the year and David Rubin is term-limited out this summer.
