My how time flies. It seemed it was only yesterday that we were watching a young, sweet and bespectacled Abigail Breslin take a road trip with her oddball family in “Little Miss Sunshine.” And while she has done a handful of films since — including most notably “Zombieland” — we’re still kind of shocked that she’s now fifteen years old. And clearly, she’s ready to try something a bit darker and more adult.
And so, the sweet beauty pageant contestant is now becoming a murderer as Breslin has signed on for “The Class Project.” Based on the book “The Class Project: How To Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada’s Infamous Bathtub Girls” by Bob Mitchell, the story follows two sisters who can’t put up with their alcoholic mom or her abusive boyfriends any longer and decide to kill her. Their mother is discovered drowned in a bathtub in what is ruled as booze-and-pill induced accident, but soon investigators start zeroing in on the girls as the perpetrators of the crime. This ain’t no Kit Kittredge shit.
Fabrizio Filippo and Adam Till — who are the scribes behind the Canadian sitcom “Billable Hours” — have penned the screenplay, with Stan Brooks making his directorial debut. No word yet on who will kill with Breslin but we should find out soon enough. Production starts this month. [Variety]
