Got a Tip?

ABC & Marvel TV In Talks About A New Series Focusing On A “Mostly Brand-New” Female Superhero

The slow-bleeding death of the Marvel-Netflix partnership earlier this year may have irked fans with the subsequent cancellations of “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” “Punisher,” “Iron Fist,” and “Jessica Jones”—all semi-well-regarded shows— but those looking to get their small-screen superhero fix, have reason to be excited about the future.

Along with the shows recently announced as part of Marvel’s Phase 4 —the first of which, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” is expected to premiere on the world’s new favorite streaming service Disney+ in the fall of 2020— the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to continue its ancillary network TV presence as well. ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke hinted at the possibility the character at the center of the as-yet-untitled show would be “something brand new, mostly.” Most telling, at least for right now, she also said, “the series would fit in with its strategy of female-focused superheroes.” That is clearly a new priority for Marvel with the recent introduction of Captain Marvel and the upcoming “Black Widow next May, which will serve as a springboard for the Phase 4 slate.

ABC was also home to the short-lived “Agent Carter” Marvel series, which ended in 2016, as well as the even shorter-lived “Inhumans” series (Remember that disaster?). As recently as last August, ABC executive Channing Dungey reportedly told Deadline that the gears were turning on some projects, even saying, “I’m very excited about it.”

That being said, there is still a wealth of female Marvel characters the show could focus on. She-Hulk? One of the biggest names not yet MCU canon. A do-over with Elektra? You’ve got to imagine the interest would be there. A Kitty Pryde or Rogue TV story is probably not the way forward given the X-Men will eventually be part of the MCU, and they’ll want to save them for the movies. It’s perhaps a bit too early for that, but we can dream on. Let the speculation begin.
