Update: Images removed at the request of Fox Searchlight.
While we’re just over two months away from Terrence Malick‘s “The Tree Of Life” hitting theaters, all we’ve had to sate our appetite for the film has been the wonderful trailer and a couple of very select official stills. Well, get ready to feast your eyes.
The Film Stage uncovered a bounty of images from “The Tree Of Life” over at the Russian film site KinoPoisk. And what can we say? They look sublime. While we’ve been discussing the Oscar prospects of the pic around the Playlist water cooler, if anything, the costume design alone looks great. And it should be noted, that pretty much all of these pics focus on the domestic scenes of the film; there are no shots of the cosmos here and probably just as well—we’ll want to see what Malick has conjured up for that on the big screen.
The long-gestating picture is a drama that ferries between a father in the 1950s (Brad Pitt) and his son Jack (Sean Penn), now grown up decades later and dealing with residue from his childhood. Take a look at a huge chunk of the pictures after the jump and the archive linked above for a few more. “The Tree Of Life” opens on May 27th.
I think the credit of the \”uncovering\” goes to IMDb user alpha-team that shared it 4 or 5 days ago, and not to The Film Stage.. As Jordan is reading the IMDb board…
Can I just go out on a whim–and a limb–and say this is going to be Terrence Malick\’s masterpiece?
for those that have commented on TFS and IMDb, I\’ve posted the following message:
I actually have Google Alerts set up for \”The Tree of Life\” and \”Terrence Malick\” and these popped up, along with almost every article I posted on the film thus far. I always give credit where credit is due and you\’ve seen the IMDb boards sourced before on the site. If I found them there, I would have definitely given them a shout-out.
I came on here after finding the photos myself, but if you would like a credit I\’d be happy to add one since you guys are as big of fans as I am.
Just let me know,

Good fucking glory…
Words fail me. Chastain leaps out of every one of the pictures that she\’s in. She\’s got to be a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination, right? Category would obviously depend on how meaty the role is…
Woah. Can\’t wait.
BTW, i just realized, that this is the first movie Malick has done that involves a modern setting. At least with Penn\’s portion of the film.
Some of those pictures (in particular, Chastain hugging the two boys in the desert) have a deeply moving quality–they\’re like a great painting–they recall Andrew Wyeth somehow. Hard to explain, but….Malick is a great fan of Wyeth\’s \”Christina\’s World\” and somehow those picture have the same poignancy and longing.
MINOR SPOILER: In the script, the prehistoric earth and space scenes are imagined by the Sean Penn character. Based on some shots in the trailer of him in what appear to be his office, he seems to be some kind of geologist or surveyor or something (there\’s a hard hat conspicously placed on a desk behind him in one shot); the script doesn\’t actually specify a job for him, I don\’t think….
It all looks so real…
Could the dinosaur and cosmos sequences be a story that Brad Pitt is telling his young sons?
I\’m not flicking through those in case of mild spoilers but holy crap.
These are amazing.
I can\’t remember the last time I was this excited to see a film.
Pitt looks great here, an Oscar nomination for him as probably one for Chastain. That one picture of them sitting with touching hands, wow. These pictures radiate with the life of those times of the 40\’s and 50\’s. TerryM is a genius.
Can\’t wait to see this!!!!!!
Who\’s the hot redhead!!!
Yeah, but that\’s all the Film Stage — troll those boards, a little obssesed, does so more power to them. the IMDB message boards aren\’t a publication.
