Earlier today, a new poster for Lars Von Trier‘s “Melancholia” hit the web and a new website for the film was launched at about the same time, but was down when we went to go check it out. Well, it’s back up and running and there are a plethora of new images to gaze at.
Where “Antichrist” was outwardly surreal (hello, talking foxes), Von Trier seems to be going inward this time around. These pics have an overall tone of something creepy and spooky — so is “Melancholia” the psychological counterpart to the director’s much more visceral film from last year? Guess we’ll have to wait and see, but at any rate it looks simply gorgeous, and we presume that’s thanks to the work of cinematographer Manuel Alberto Claro.
As you already know, the film stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier. “Melancholia” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, hit U.K. cinemas on September 30th and land on U.S. screens on a date TBD by Magnet. An official synopsis and lots more images below.
Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and brother-in-law (Kiefer Sutherland). Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth… MELANCHOLIA is a psychological disaster movie from director Lars von Trier.
Kirsten really looks spectacular here. I have a feeling that she will turn in a riveting performance.
There\’s also two nice promo pics of Lars in the download section of the website. F-U-C-K spelled on the fingers of his right hand.
Very clever Laura 🙂
Yanked from the website. Started with this and just changed the numbers up to like 18 or so I think. There\’s some really beautiful ones

Man is it good to see Kiefer in a serious movie that is not an action flick or a cheesy thriller.
Looks like Tree of Life meets Another Earth- Cant wait!
Hey thanks, Laura. I\’ve added it. Where did you find it? I didn\’t see it on the site.
I have no idea what\’s going on, but this one freaks me out

The more I see, the more excited I get. Can\’t wait to hear word out of Cannes. Looks menacing..
I feel like this will be a post-apocalyptic version of \”The Celebration\”
Not typically a Von Trier fan, but this actually looks great.
