Another year, another Asghar Farhadi film premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. “A Hero,” the Iranian director’s latest film, is now the fourth straight movie of Farhadi’s to have its world premiere at the festival. While the film didn’t win the coveted Palme d’Or, it walked away with the next best prize, The Grand Prix, as well as The François Chalais Prize. Not a bad haul to go along with the movie’s near-universal praise from critics.
“A Hero” finds Farhadi back in his native country after departing to Spain for 2018’s “Everybody Knows.” The drama follows a man in prison whose attempt to fix a debt leads only to more problems.

“A Hero” has already been selected as Iran’s Best International Feature Film entry for the 94th annual Academy Awards. Farhadi has had great success at the Oscars, as he’s won the award for both 2011’s “A Separation” and 2016’s “The Salesman.” While “A Hero” hasn’t been nominated yet by the Academy, it’s undoubtedly a sure-fire favorite for the award this winter.
