Got a Tip?

Disney Promises New ‘Star Wars’ Movie Every Year Starting With ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ In Summer 2015

J.J. Abrams, 'Star Wars'At a multiplex not so far away, in a galaxy you already live in, you are going be getting a whole lot more “Star Wars” very, very soon and on an annual basis. Just like filing your taxes and rotating your tires, the “Star Wars” franchise is going to become a yearly ritual.

Today at CinemaCon, Disney announced that “Star Wars: Episode 7” would be coming in summer 2015, and that a brand new “Star Wars” movie will follow every summer, alternating between the new trilogy and the standalone offshoot films. Having paid $4 billion for Lucasfilm last fall, it’s clear Disney wants to not only recoup that cost, but also start making some mad cash, and a new “Star Wars” movie each year — combined with Marvel’s ongoing, expanding cinematic universe — is going to make the studio the pre-eminent powerhouse around town. And 2015 alone is going to be insane for Disney with both “The Avengers 2” and “Star Wars: Episode VII” dropping. Madness.

Yoda, Boba Fett and a (young) Han Solo are all expected to get their own movies (though no writers and directors have been announced yet) while details on where J.J. Abrams and co. will take the main trilogy next are under wraps (though Patton Oswalt has some suggestions). But basically, we know that six movies are coming (the next trilogy, three spinoffs) so from 2015-2020, it’s going to be geek heaven at the movies. [ComingSoon]

  1. I'm mad that the best movie series in the world was just sold to disney! Their just gonna turn it into a musical and princess Leia is a Disney princess! Although! I'm so mad! Oops I'm a Jedi don't ttlell anyone!

  2. You'd think Disney would wait and see if Ep. 7 is successful, before announcing more movies. Anyone remember a year before the first prequel (The Phantom Menace), the built up excitement for fanboys was like jar jar on a case of red bull. Lucas HAS input, even though he sold his baby. Sorry I mentioned Jar. Cheers!

  3. Very interesting that we'll be getting, for the first time, the main saga films every 2 years instead of every 3 years. Disney must be shelling out a lot on effects and CGI work to get things done that quickly, I suppose.

  4. i love star wars and am thoroughly looking forward to the new ones but…..idunno if this'll be too much of a good thing. i would hate for the franchise to become a bit overexposed.
