Got a Tip?

Kristen Stewart Joins Olivier Assayas’ ‘Sils Maria’ With Juliette Binoche & Chloe Moretz; Mia Wasikowska Out

Kristen StewartThings have been a bit quiet for Kristen Stewart after a pretty loud 2012. Of course the “Twilight” saga came to an end, “On The Road” hit the festival circuit, was sorta released in December and then sorta re-released again this past spring and then there was messy situation surrounding “Snow White And The Huntsman” and tabloid-fueled scandal regarding her dalliance with Rupert Sanders. All of this goes to say there are good reasons for her to have kept a low profile. While 2013 has seen her exit a couple projects — Warner Bros. con-man rom-comFocus” and “Lay Down In Darkness” (which Scott Cooper asserts she was never really attached to) — now she’s ramping up for two new movies.

The most intriguing of the bunch is a role in Olivier Assayas‘ next effort, “Sils Maria.” The project will see Stewart joining Juliette Binoche and Chloe Moretz, in the story of an older actress (Binoche) who gets obsessed-over by a younger thesp (Moretz) taking on a role the older actress made famous. Stewart will be playing Binoche’s assistant. As far as arthouse moves go, this could be a great fit for Stewart, who we think is a solid actress. She could find a nice showcase for her skills in Assayas’ actor-centric style, and will no doubt benefit from the masterful presence of Binoche, who reteams with Assayas after 2008’s superb “Summer Hours”. What about Mia Wasikowska? Well, she’s actually no longer involved with the movie, bummer, but this trio will do nicely.

And that’s not all for Stewart who has also joined “Camp X-Ray.” It’s a much grittier movie, that will find Stewart in the lead, playing a soldier who gets assigned to Guantanamo Bay where she forges a friendship with a man who has been imprisoned for eight years. The movie will mark the feature debut of Peter Sattler, who previous credits were as a graphic designer on “Star Trek,” “Walk The Line” and “The Game Plan” among others. Must be a helluva script, but it does have producing power of David Gordon Green behind it; Sattler was a set-dresser on Green’s early efforts “All The Real Girls” and “Undertow.”

“Since Maria” will shoot first this summer, before she moves on to “Camp X-Ray.” [Deadline]

  1. If people don't like Kristen and /or her acting in movies, don't read about her or her movies! Nobody is forcing anyone to read about her or watch any movie much less hers. It is such an immature attitude when someone just constantly criticizes an actress over an over again with different adjectives like as the rest of us dont't understand or need to be enlightened. The Twilight saga is history now, please don't look stupid by trying to convince everybody how you are so intelligent and everyone that liked Twilight is not. Everyone had different opinions and tastes. We like Kristen, and nothing anyone says is going to change that. Understand?

  2. So glad Kristen will be filming this summer. Can't wait to see her in both. She is a great actor that has an undeniable presence. She's not just the "Twilight Girl", and I hope people get past that and whatever her relationship is / was with Robert Pattinson. Look at her with fresh eyes and I bet you'll be surprised at how much you enjoy her work.

  4. More pretentious dreck destined for the dollar bin from the world's worst actress. Talk about a downgrade. I would pay to see Kristen Stewart playing a soldier but only for the comedic value.

  5. "Sorry, but I don't buy it. Mia is just not THAT busy."

Jo: Not that busy? Mia will be shooting Maps to the Stars, Carol and Madame Bovary over the course of the next 4-5 months, while she has three other movies in the can awaiting release. She is getting scads of choice roles in her age group right now. Meanwhile, what does KStew have? The Snow White sequel that won't even shoot till next year and Big Shoe (which MW also departed) still in development, that is when she's not busy dropping out of everything else.

"Stewart on the other hand takes on what is arguably the most bland cinematic character ever written and dishes out a worldwide phenomenon, only to follow up with a 400 million blockbuster fairy tale, when fairy tales don't seem to connect with audiences any longer. "

Alice in Wonderland – starring Mia – made over $1 billion; all of the Twilight films grossed that much combined. It also won two Oscars and kickstarted the whole "fairy tale update" craze for better or for worse (case in point, it was the ONLY reason that SWATH got made). KStew/Twilight can't exactly boast that. BTW, "Oz" made $230 million domestically, so I'm not sure where you pulled that $90m figure from.

Dished out a worldwide phenomenon playing the worst heroine in literary history with that perpetual stinkface, a role (and franchise) that spawned a million Razzies? Are you for real?

"Don't get me wrong, I think [Mia] is a really good actress but lacks sth. very important. Presence."

Yes, Mia has zero presence, which is why she regularly receives critical acclaim for her performances. Jane Eyre, Stoker, The Kids Are All Right, and so on. The likes of Time magazine aren't penning articles about KStew's onscreen talent while I have yet to see YouTube video montages mocking Mia's acting. Meanwhile, KStew's biggest presence regularly involves her antagonizing photographers, so there's no pot for you to piss in there.

"Kristen Stewart is kind of captivating, she can just stare at stuff and it works because I still want to watch it."

And yet it's the creator of Buffy saying that, not Martin Scorsese or James Cameron or any director of note.

Thank you, drive-through, and sit down.

  6. Wow, this is like going from a German knife to a spork. Guess the only way for KStew to get roles nowadays is to pick up Mia W.'s leftovers.

And I love all the "oh, we can take Stewart seriously as an actress now" nonsense that's now coming out of the woodwork. Puhlease.

  7. LMAO! The description for that Camp movie sounds like an offensive mess already and as a first time directing effort from a former graphic designer who managed to get his famous mate to take a producing credit. Not holding my breath for that one.

Not that fussed Mia dropped out of "Sils Maria". It isn't a big role so I think she only signed on originally for Olivier and Juliette. I'm looking forward to Mia's other projects more.

  8. Glad she's got 2 films that aren't about romance or sex. Both roles sound like they showcase a modern young woman. What's with Mia W's castoffs going to Kristen as Kristen got her The Big Shoe role as well.
