Got a Tip?

Rock Doc ‘It Might Get Loud’ Coming To Theaters Summer 2009

“It Might Get Loud” is a documentary centering on three “rock guitar gods,” Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s The Edge, and The White Stripes’ Jack White.

Sony Pictures Classics has grabbed North American film distribution rights with a plan to roll it out in theaters Summer 2009 according to the Hollywood Reporter. We saw the film when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The doc, which traced each guitarist in the here-and-now about their techniques and relationship to the guitar, wasn’t mandatory viewing or anything, but if you’re a big fan of any of these three, it’s probably worth watching as it was fun to watch (the culminating scenes where they jam together are interesting too). We’re not gigantic U2 fans (though we do like them), but we particularly liked The Edge’s low-key, humorous attitude and ideas of sonic exploration via effects pedals. Our review has a bit more, but we were pressed for time and running off to the next screening as is the way of TIFF and all film fests.

  1. I was wondering when this was gonna get released. Now all we need is a trailer. I’m just wondering how this is not mandatory viewing? I’m not saying you’re wrong in your assertation, but I love all three subjects in the film, and can’t wait to see what it’s like. Just like I couldn’t wait for No Direction Home and Shine a Light etc. Do they have alot of old footage of the musicians playing, or is it all new stuff?

  2. Circusfolk, i added some context. Essentially, it’s a doc that tracks them now and has little to do with their past (they do talk about it though). It’s mostly about their individual relationships with the guitar, where they learned to play as kids, where they recorded albums, etc, them playing guitar and then it culminates in a big jam session where they play guitar and talk about their passion for the instrument.

It’s a fine little doc, it’s just something i would have rather watched on IFC, rather than paid to see.
