Here’s a question: can a toy movie actually be genuinely … good? It’s a nut that Hollywood has had a hard time cracking, particularly of late. “Transformers” may be a successful franchise, but to call them “good” would be contort and reconfigure the word like so many robots in disguise. The less said about “Battleship” the better, while Relativity has straight up thrown in the towel on “Stretch Armstrong” being a thing. But Legos? That’s a whole a different ballgame.
Beloved by generations, still played with by grown men now, it only makes sense that Warner Bros. would build (ha) a movie around the construction blocks. That it’s one as clever in concept as this, is what makes “Lego The Movie” worth paying attention to. The story centers on on Emmett, a regular everyday little Lego figure, who is mistaken as a MasterBuilder and suddenly becomes part of a group on a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing everything together. So yes, he’ll have to run through all kinds of Lego worlds (which we can only imagine makes toy executives droll at what is essentially supersized promo) but coming from “21 Jump Street” and “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs” pals Phil Lord and Chris Miller, this looks like it’s hitting the right tone.
