Confusion reigns, at least for us concerning the casting of Spike Jonze’s”Where The Wild Things Are” and the actors that were hired to do the voices.
We all know Michelle Williams was once one of the voices and then was replaced by Lauren Ambrose, cause her voice didn’t really fit. So where other actors’ voices replaced as well? The original voice cast following the Williams/Ambrose change was Paul Dano, Catherine O’Hara, James Gandolfini, Forest Whitaker and Tom Noonan. Then after a lengthy AICN interview with Spike Jonze, it was revealed that Chris Cooper (“Adaptation”) had also voiced one of the creatures (Max was played by Max Records and Catherine Keener plays his mom).
However, this weekend, Warner Bros. released their online schedule and Mark Ruffalo was listed among the cast. What? Since when? Since now apparently There’s some speculation that he might play Keener’s boyfriend in the film that scolds Max, leading him to run away in the first place, but from all accounts (including Jonze’s) that scene has been cut out of the film (or at least severely truncated). Furthermore the press info on the WB site does not list Chris Cooper or Tom Noonan for that matter (Film School Rejects has posted the whole thing).
So is Ruffalo a Wild Thing or is he human? Is Chris Cooper still in this thing? We spoke to Moriarty who conducted the lengthy Jonze interview and he said Cooper played Alexander the goat, not Paul Dano which fucks up our whole, Who Voices Who In The Wild Things piece. Does that mean Dano isn’t part of the film? Does anyone have any clear answers in the casting for godsake? Are we the only ones this anal about it all? Someone please fill us is.
