The first reviews for Lars von Trier‘s theatrical cut of “Nymphomaniac” rolled in earlier this week, and as usual, the filmmaker has defied expectations. Yes, there is lot of flesh on screen but many of the reviews instead focused on the ideas contained therein. But still, one has to wonder about what von Trier has cooking in his 5 1/2 hour director’s cut of the movie, which runs 90 minutes longer than the theatrical version and will be more sexually explicit. Well, we’re about to find out.
The Berlin Film Festival has announced that they’ve landed the world premiere of “Nymphomaniac Part 1,” which will screen out of competition at the festival. There’s no word yet on how much extra material this longer cut will have, but many will be eager to see von Trier’s complete vision as he intended. It’s a bit curious to have both a director’s cut and theatrical cut hitting cinemas in some form pretty much at the same time, and there’s no word yet on what kind of release the uncut version will get. We’re betting it’s going to be one you’ll have to order up at home — perhaps as part of that planned internet series?
As always, provocative questions surround Lars von Trier’s latest, but in a matter of months you’ll be able to see the theatrical cut when it lands stateside. As for Lars von Trier’s cut of “Nymphomaniac Part 2,” no word yet on where that will premiere, but Cannes is the next big international festival after Berlin. While Thierry Fremaux has said “Nymphomaniac” isn’t eligible for a competition slot, out of competition is still wide open….
“Nymphomaniac: Part One” opens in theaters on March 21, 2014, and will be available On Demand starting March 6, 2014. “Nymphomaniac: Part Two” will open in theaters on April 18, 2014 and will be available On Demand as of April 3, 2014.
