Things seem to be boding well for Danny Boyle’s little ‘Slumdog’ flic, as if you haven’t noticed. The film already won the Golden Globe and has now picked up the coveted Producers Guild (PGA) award for Best Film of the Year – the most accurate bellwether for Oscar.
One might think that winning both awards could only help substantiate an Oscar victory, but the statistics don’t support it. Only two films in the past eight years (“Gladiator” and “LOTR:Return of The King”) won both the Globe and the PGA, and then went on to win the Oscar. We’re not saying it can’t happen again, but we know how the Academy likes to be different. Other winners included the absolute surest bet of the year, “Wall-E” for the animated category, and “Man on Wire” for documentary.
In case you’re unaware, ‘Slumdog’ beat out the three other Oscar Best Picture nominees for the PGA prize, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk” plus “The Dark Knight,” which was nominated for the PGA honor, but obviously did not score an Oscar nod. – Jonathan Helm
I would seriously bank on a win. It doesn’t really seem like they have much competition and I’m sure they’ll sweep the Oscars like they did the Globes.
and i’ll be happy as hell and the film will totally deserve it and all will be well in Oscar world as far as I’m concerned.
It really does deserve to win, but I have this horrible feeling about Ben Button…
Well if you remember, Slumdog also won the National Board of Review earlier this year, another big Oscar predicter. I personally think it’s on its way to Oscar glory, but was trying to play devil’s advocate in the post. Don’t forget Brokeback Mountain won both the Globe and the PGA only to lose the Oscar. Just trying to prepare us for an upset is all.
i really used to think it was between, Milk, Slumdog and Button, but being reminded of the academy gay bias, Slumdog and Button seem safer. Not it comes down to the old and young voters and how they vote. Slumdog has a real shot, perhaps the best one, but Button has stars, americans and themes that appeal to an over 50 crowd. We never do see the final numbers (kinda a shame), but it’ll be close either way.
Doing a tad more research….if Slumdog does win the Oscar, it will be the first film since American Beauty to win the NBR, PGA, Globe, and the Oscar. Wow, I forgot what an awards monster American Beauty was…it’s been almost ten years.
I’m still waiting for someone bright to explain to me exactly how Slumdog Millionaire is the best picture of the year. Or even one of the better ones.
