Anyone completely behind on last year’s films ought to take a look at this Tuesday’s releases. There’s no shortage of critically-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated films available, starting with Best Actor and Best Original (heh) Screenplay winner “Milk.” “Milk” strikes out on the format with extra features that include deleted scenes, and three making-of docs. Also on the docket is the haunting Swedish horror picture “Let The Right One In,” which is set to be remade by Satanic forces taking the form of Matt Reeves later this spring. Extras on that include a behind-the-scene featurette, deleted scenes and a chance to freeze frame that gnarly cat attack scene. Also hitting DVD are awards-favorites “Rachel Getting Married,” “Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Cadillac Records” (Jeffery Wright- most underrated performance of the year?) and what some of us may consider the best movie of 2008, Charlie Kaufman’s puzzle box masterpiece “Synecdoche, New York.”
Looking for something without the smell of new on it? “Howard The Duck” makes its long awaited debut on DVD. Long regarded as a failure, “Howard” is worth lauding for its wicked soundtrack, and the DVD is loaded with retrospective featurettes that hammer home the difficulties of the production. Meanwhile, Disney opens its vault for the 70th anniversary of “Pinocchio,” another release of “The Miracle Worker” and the “Witch Mountain” films . Rounding out the new releases are fun for the undemanding, “Transporter 3” and “Role Models,” while Blu-Ray gathers “Brokeback Mountain,” “Seven” and “Traffic.”
Pretty big day for DVDs. Anyone know the next Disney classic to be released on Blu Ray and when?
i can honestly say this is the best dvd week in three years as i’ve been working in a video store that long.
Not a masterpiece, that Synecdoche. Was a fun script though.
This is probably the most stacked DVD release date ever. And I will fight whoever claims Synecdoche isn’t a masterpiece.
It’s a masterful script by a brilliant writer that still doesn’t know how to direct. Good start, but it does the incredible screenplay little justice.
Anybody who likes Slumdog Millionaire more than Synecdoche, NY probably doesn’t like movies. IT MUST BE SAID.
