Drew Barrymore’s roller derby dramedy, “Whip It” starring Ellen Page — and an ensemble that also features Andrew Wilson, Kirsten Wiig, Eve, Alia Shawkat, Jimmy Fallon, Juliette Lewis — hits theaters this Friday (October 2).
We saw it the picture at TIFF recently and while it starts out a little uneven initially, it does make for a sweet, come-from-behind victory. And Marcia Gay Harden is really the best thing about it, playing a mother who’s wonderfully flawed and yet still likable — sort of like all mom’s lovable, but sometimes big pains in the ass.
Anywhoo, we noted a few weeks ago, the soundtrack, which came out this Tuesday, features the likes of the Go! Team, The Raveonettes, Jens Lekman, The Ramones and 19 tracks in total. But the movie itself, features a whopping 75 music cues all in all.
So we have for you two different treats. First, the three (technically two) soundtrack songs specifically-written (one remixed) for the film which include, Landon Pigg’s (who also appears in the film as the Page’s romantic) “High Times,” with the Turbo Fruits, Har Mar Superstar and Adam Green cover of ’60s sunshine pop band the Associations “Never My Love” featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on horns (Har Mar also has a small cameo) and the Chordettes’ classic ’50s bubblegum tune “Lollipop” as remixed by Squeak E. Clean (Spike Jonze’s brother) and Desert Eagles (Squeak E. Clean also composed the score to David O. Russell’s never-gonna-get-released political satire, “Nailed“).
And then we have the full list of every song used in “Whip It” the film. You’ll recall that Rhino Records, who put out the soundtrack is toying with the idea of putting out a second soundtrack disc and they’d have plenty of music to choose from if they can licence it all including Radiohead (“No Surprises”), The American Analog Set, several Go! Team tracks, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Eagles of Death Metal, Badly Drawn Boy, Kings of Leon, Jon Brion (three recycled score tunes from previous films) and a few cues that look like they’re original score material written by Squeak E. Clean (aka Sam Spiegel of NASA). String quartet The Section Quartet are credited with the original score, but another composer favorite of ours David Torn looks like he lent a few music cues as well. Whether they’re original or recycled remains to be seen however as much of his soundtrack instrumental cues (“The Wackness,” “Anvil”) have never been released (though one is clearly from “Lars and the Real Girl”).

Ridiculously excited to see this.
Thanks for posting this! After seeing the movie, there were a couple songs that I really wanted to find, and they are not on the soundtrack. I had to search for a clip of nearly every song listed here to find what I was looking for, but I did find them (Lorene Scafaria, "28" & MGMT, "Kids"). Along the way, I did find what I think are some typos/corrections in the above list:
-Two songs that are on the soundtrack aren't listed (Raveonettes, "Dead Sound" and Gotye, "Learnalilgivinanlovin")
–Kasabain should be Kasabian
–Dead Meadows should be Dead Meadow
-I think the song title by Kyuss should be "800", not "Boo"
–Badly Drawn Boy has an album "About A Boy" (soundtrack for that movie), but there doesn't appear to be a song by that title
–Turbo Fruits and Landon, "Hightimes" is listed twice (maybe it was in the movie twice and this list is in order of appearance in the movie?)
Also, the wikipedia page for Lorene Scafaria seems to suggest that her song "28" is original to this movie. Shouldn't that be included in the list with those other 3? (maybe it wasn't written for the movie, but it was otherwise unreleased?).
Thanks again!
also seems that that might have been a Festival version of the soundtrack/score because i don't think any of the other film score cues you heard are in the final release.
Nope. The list came from Fox Searchlight.
holy shit this is the most amazing movie music ever
Just saw the film and am now going crazy trying to find one of the tracks from it. The scene where she's at the party, goes upstairs where all the records are and puts a particular one on and the boy says "Good choice" – well before THAT there is the coolest and stunning track, kinda starts with a trumpet, real mellow chilled vibe. It's not on that list, don't think it written by Landon either and it's not guitar based.
I'm guessing nobody's gonna know what the hell i'm talking about though right?
Kris – the song is definitely Jens Lekman – I rember recognising it, pretty sure it's Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill but there were a couple of Jen's tracks in the movie
What the song where Blisses dad goes and gets her team, then convinces her mom to let her go the the finals.
I like need to know!
I've been looking for the musical score that was featured in the scene where Bliss breaks up with Oliver before the championship match. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone had any knowledge as to who composed it and what the song title is. I re-watched Whip It and replayed that scene over and over, and tried searching for it on Google, YouTube and on this site, but no luck!
