Got a Tip?

Will You Ever See Herzog’s ‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done’ In Theaters Outside of NY/LA? Mmm, Maybe…

One for the Herzog die-hards out there only….Those who thought they might have had to wait for a DVD release of Werner Herzog’s newest film “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done” may have some newfound hope of seeing the film in theaters.

In a rare Boston screening we attended this past week, producer and co-writer Herbert Golder revealed that the bizarre film is still attempting to be distributed beyond the limited New York/Los Angeles release. Currently, the executive producer is distributing the film himself to interested theaters in the U.S., which purportedly have been increasing after recent positive reviews have overshadowed a somewhat dismal response at last year’s Toronto Film Festival (though really it has a 36% rating on RT). Golder is optimistic that the film might even pick up wider distribution at some point, with potential deals with Lionsgate being discussed. But how much has the film grossed so far? Evidently so little the Box-Office Mojo hasn’t made a page for it.

The bizarre Lynch-ian home-video quality (random midgets and irate ostriches are normal… right?) of Herzog’s film clearly stands in the way of any sort of mass appeal or wide distribution. The film is still undeniably, uniquely bizarre (see our TIFF review for one writer’s differing thoughts) but will probably appeal to any die-hard fans of Herzog or Lynch.

Be on the lookout for any screenings of ‘My Son’ in your area before any potential news of a DVD release. For Boston area readers, the film screens again this weekend at the Museum of Fine Arts. — Jon Davies
