‘Gears Of War’: Netflix Is Developing Live-Action & Animated Adaptations Of The Video Game Franchise

Even though it appears that “Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners” isn’t getting a Season 2, Netflix is keen to keep its video game adaptations coming. For its latest franchise, the studio is hoping that bringing “Gears of War” to life will do the trick.

According to THR, Netflix has scored the rights to adapt the “Gears of War” video game franchise into a new multimedia behemoth. While no real details are known at this time, Netflix is hoping to kick things off with a live-action “Gears of War” film followed by an adult animated series. And obviously, if those projects take off, then the sky’s the limit.

“Gears of War” is a hyperviolent video game franchise that follows a group of soldiers as they carry ridiculous guns and blow the hell out of insect-like monsters. Think something like “Starship Troopers” but way more macho. It’s like the bro-y, even more violent younger sibling to “Halo,” in a sense.

As mentioned, Netflix has scored some recent video game adaptation success with the “Edgerunners” anime series. However, conversely, the studio struggled to find an audience for its recent “Resident Evil” series adaptation, which led to that franchise getting the early cancellation after only one season.

That said, video games are still a massive industry, and “Gears of War” is one of the most successful franchises in video game history. So, it would stand to reason that Netflix could attract some eyeballs for ‘Gears’ content. We’ll just have to see if it’s actually any good or not.
