Got a Tip?

‘Shrek Forever After’ To Open 2010 Tribeca Film Festival

The DreamWorks Animation sequel “Shrek Forever After” will open the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.

Why do we care? We don’t really, but it’s significant news because this is certainly the biggest, well-known film that the Tribeca Film Festival has announced in years.

Typically a good, but low-key affair, last year the festival acquired, Geoff Gilmore, a chief creative officer from the Sundance Film Festival (which lead some to assume that this is why Tribeca artistic director Peter Scarlet left last year).

So is this an aggressive new move on Gilmore’s part to acquire some bigger name films and put this festival on the map? Since we’re in New York, we sure hope so.

The premiere of “Shrek Forever After” will take place on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 and will hit theaters a month later on May 21st. The Tribeca Film Festival runs until May 2. The festival will announce the rest of their slate of films on March 10th and 15th.

  1. I think you guys are misrepresenting Tribeca opening nights in the past. It's often a big spring/early summer hollywood movie. Yes, this is going to be a bigger hit than say Poseidon or Baby Mama, but it is in keeping with what they do (Star Wars) and not a Gilmore inspired departure. In fact, I would bet its Jane Rosenthal who is getting the opening night film, not Gilmore.
