The 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has come to an end after over a week of cinematic delights. At the closing night ceremony, The KVIFF President’s Award was presented to both Czech actor Bolek Polívka and Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro, with the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema was presented to Geoffrey Rush.
Before the closing ceremony, the non-statutory awards were announced, where two Czech films, the drama “Borders of Love” and the documentary “Art Talent Show,” were honored by the journalistic FIPRESCI jury at the 56th KVIFF. While the Ecumenical awarded the Bulgarian-German documentary “Provincial Hospital” and the Europa Cinemas Label jury by the Polish drama “Fucking Bornholm.” The complete list of non-statutory awards can be found here.
The KVIFF Grand Prix – the Crystal Globe – was awarded to the Iranian-Canadian social drama “Summer with Hope,” directed by Sadaf Foroughi. The Special Jury Prize went to the Spanish film “You Have to Come and See It,” directed by Jonás Trueba.
Beata Parkanová and Martin Finger received the Best Director Award and the Best Actor Award for the Czech “The Word.” Actresses Mariam Khundadze and Taki Mumladze, who also co-wrote the screenplay, were awarded Best Actress for the Georgian film “A Room of My Own.”
The first-ever winner of the new Proxima festival competition went to the documentary “Art Talent Show,” directed by Adela Komrzý and Tomáš Bojar, while the Proxima Special Jury Prize went to the Spanish-Argentine film “La Pietà” directed by Eduardo Casanova. The Croatian-Serbian film “The Uncle,” directed by David Kapac and Andrija Mardesic, received the Proxima Jury Special Mention.
Lastly, the Právo Audience Award went to the documentary “PSH Neverending Story” by director Štěpán FOK Vodrážka.
Next year will mark the 57th edition of KVIFF, which is set to be held from 30 June to 8 July 2023.
