‘She-Hulk’: Tatiana Maslany Says Her Character Is The “Antithesis Of Most Superhero Narratives”

When the trailer for “She-Hulk” was released weeks ago, fans were a bit concerned. The CGI that was clearly in early development for the title character didn’t look right, at all. It was distractingly bad. Well, we are now about a month away from “She-Hulk” hitting Disney+, and you have to assume the VFX will be taken care of. That means star Tatiana Maslany can explain how the actual content of the series will be unlike what you’ve seen before.

Speaking to Empire, Tatiana Maslany talked about her inspiration for “She-Hulk,” as well as what makes the new Disney+ series different than the various other superhero projects we are inundated with nowadays. For those unfamiliar with the comics, “She-Hulk” follows the story of Jennifer Walters (Maslany), the cousin of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) aka Hulk. Through some shenanigans, she also gains the ability to turn green and strong, except she is able to use her entire intellect and continue on as a lawyer. A big, green lawyer specializing in superhuman cases.

“She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives,” Maslany said. “There’s this great element of denial in her that’s relatable. For me, it was about rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk.”

She continued, “She’s in a career that’s male-dominated and incredibly vicious and hierarchal. When she’s heading this superhuman firm, that’s where we get some really fun characters that she’s either defending or in opposition of. It’s like this really absurd take on a legal show.”

As for Maslany’s inspiration for her performance as She-Hulk, the actress names a trans music artist, Sophie, as someone she took watched and studied.

“I always come back to Sophie, who’s this amazing trans artist who unfortunately died last year,” she explained. “What I love about Sophie’s music is this combo of organic and electrical, industrial-type sounds that felt connected to She-Hulk.”

“She-Hulk” is set to arrive on Disney+ on August 17.
