The Irish romantic psychological drama “Normal People” from BBC Three, Hulu, author Sally Rooney, and Academy Award-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson (“Frank,” “Room“) was a huge hit in the spring of 2020, distracting many through the pandemic and creating a word of mouth buzz that continued all summer long. The series also made big, breakout stars out of its leads Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, who have gone on to become very in-demand actors. Well, some of the band is getting back together as it were for “Conversations with Friends.”

“Conversations with Friends” is based on the Sally Rooney novel of the same name and reunites her again with Lenny Abrahamson who helped earn Brie Larson an Academy Award for Best Actress in his 2015 movie “Room.” As seen in the new trailer, the series follows the story of a young college student who has to navigate the world of relationships and confront her own struggles and vulnerabilities. Yes, if you loved “Normal People,” this one seems tailor-made for you too.
The cast for the new drama series includes Alison Oliver, Joe Alwyn, Sasha Lane, and Jemima Kirke. While none of the “Normal People” cast is back, fans will at least be happy to know it’s still most of the same creatives involved. The series is also co-written by Alice Birch, who adapted most of “Normal People” with the writer/director. Along in the director’s chair with Abrahamson this time is Leanne Welham, known for “Pili” and episodes of “His Dark Materials.” She, in fact, directs half the series with Abrahamson.
