Got a Tip?

‘Morbius’ Star Jared Leto Isn’t Sure “Theaters Would Exist” Without Marvel Films

The ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff universe that Sony is creating is about to grow some more. After two successful “Venom” films, the studio is ready to launch its second franchise, “Morbius,” in a couple of weeks. And according to “Morbius” star Jared Leto, it’s probably lucky that theaters are getting the film so soon because they’d probably die without a steady influx of Marvel films.

Speaking to Variety about his role in “Morbius,” Jared Leto talked about the effect of superhero films (particularly Marvel films) on the box office, and how theaters might not exist if it wasn’t for these flicks. He also sneaks in a quick excuse for a potential poor box office showing for “Morbius,” if the Sony film isn’t a monster success.

Leto started by admitting that he is “a bit of a snob when it comes to film.” However, that didn’t stop him from tackling a Marvel property with “Morbius.” Leto is clearly aware of how the superhero genre is reaping big rewards at the box office.

“If it wasn’t for Marvel films, I don’t even know if theaters would exist,” he said. “It doesn’t seem like there’s room for everyone, and that starts to become a little heartbreaking.”

Obviously, no one is able to predict exactly how “Morbius” will do in theaters. We haven’t seen any reviews for the film yet and even if those are bad, that hasn’t stopped the “Venom” franchise from overcoming those odds to be a huge financial success. So, perhaps “Morbius” is destined for box office glory thanks to Leto’s star power and the red Marvel logo at the beginning of the film.

But just in case, Leto wants everyone to know that there might be a reason why “Morbius” underperforms—pandemic delays. You see, “Morbius” was originally set to be released in July 2020 but has been the casualty of various COVID delays that have affected many blockbusters over the last couple of years.

“If it doesn’t work out, we have a good excuse,” Leto said. “We waited too long.”

Speaking of waiting too long, Leto also talked about the possibility of returning to his other superhero film role, Joker, in a future Warner Bros./DC Comics film. The actor previously starred in the role in “Suicide Squad” and “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” and it seemed like he was going to be the current Joker for a long time to come. But those plans ultimately didn’t pan out, for whatever reason.

But is a Leto return as Joker in the cards anytime soon?

“Never say never,” the actor replied.

“Morbius” is set to arrive in theaters on April 1.
