Got a Tip?

Margot Robbie Says The Ayer Cut Of ‘Suicide Squad’ Is “Complicated… Not Something I’m Responsible For”

Robert Downey, Jr. will always be synonymous with the on-screen version of Iron Man. In that same way, on the DC side of things, Margot Robbie will always be linked to the role of Harley Quinn. And it’s hard to imagine her debut as the character was in David Ayer’s controversial “Suicide Squad” back in 2016, which is a film that was financially successful but generally disliked by most critics and fans. In recent years, in light of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” being a thing, fans have petitioned Warner Bros. to release an Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad,” with the filmmaker kind of leading the charge and trying to drum up interest. But even with the outcry from fans and the displeasure with the finished product from David Ayer, the film’s breakout star, Robbie, isn’t keen on getting involved with the whole discussion.

Speaking to Variety, at the premiere of the much-better “The Suicide Squad,” Margot Robbie was asked about the Ayer Cut of the 2016 “Suicide Squad.” And honestly, she is apparently set to play the role of a diplomatic politician when discussing the idea of WB giving David Ayer the chance to release his vision for the original film.

“I think that’s all a very complicated situation that I am probably not responsible ,” said Robbie. “I’d love to see the cut of every movie that I’ve been a part of that I’ve never seen…You don’t get to see the different iterations of it along the way, unless you’re a producer. So, in that case, I didn’t see [2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’] until it was out in theaters.”

Over the last couple of years, it’s been readily apparent that WB isn’t nearly as interested in bringing David Ayer’s cut of “Suicide Squad” to the fans as it was to get the Snyder Cut of “Justice League” on HBO Max. In the latter case, the studio reportedly spent north of $70 million to make the four-hour cut come to life. And though Ayer has said publicly that his “Suicide Squad” is pretty much ready to go and doesn’t need much work, executives have been quick to say the studio doesn’t seem interested at this time in making that happen.

And since Margot Robbie would love to keep playing Harley Quinn in future films and work with WB on more projects, it’s probably smart the actress is willing to keep things civil with all parties involved. Honestly, she’s probably just as excited to see James Gunn reinvent the franchise with “The Suicide Squad,” which hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6.
