Netflix (and just about every studio on the planet right now) is always on the hunt for the next big thing. The thing that is going to capture the cultural zeitgeist and enter the overall pop culture discussion, such as what happened with “Game of Thrones” at its height or to a lesser extent, Netflix’s own “Bridgerton” or “Stranger Things.” And though “Sweet Tooth” has nothing in common with any of those series, if done right, the post-apocalyptic fantasy series could be absolutely massive.
As seen in the new trailer for “Sweet Tooth,” the series follows the story of Gus, a young, hybrid deer-boy, who has to leave the safety of his secluded home to go out into the post-apocalypse and find answers and get involved in plenty of hijinks. The series stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Neil Sandilands, Will Forte, and James Brolin, as the narrator.
“Sweet Tooth” is directed by Jim Mickle (“Cold in July,” “We Are What We Are”), who also co-showruns and co-writes the series alongside Beth Schwartz. Team Downey, run by Robert Downey, Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, are producers.
“Sweet Tooth” debuts on Netflix on June 4. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Ten years ago “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery) unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie). Together they set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers— about Gus’ origins, Jepperd’s past, and the true meaning of home. But their story is full of unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.
