As release date Jenga continues its domino effect, films moved to 2021 ages ago by early-bird studios like Sony, are having to push forward again. Sony Pictures, who moved all their 2020 movies to 2021 in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic panic, has decided to push their “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel to June 11, 2021 — exactly 37 years after the original. Directed by Jason Reitman, the son of original “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman (now a producer), “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” was originally scheduled to open in July of this year before it was pushed to March 5, 2021.
‘Afterlife’ would have originally faced off against the live-action “Tom and Jerry” from the Warner Animation group. Now, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” will release against nothing significant—for now anyhow— as Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” recently left that release date vacant.

Reitman’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is a continuation of the series meant to pick up decades after the events of “Ghostbusters 2.” It also discounts the events of the all-female-lead 2016 version of “Ghostbusters” directed by Paul Feig and poorly-received by critics and at the box office.

In related Sony Pictures release date news, the company’s “Don’t Breathe 2,” the sequel to their surprise 2016 hit, now is scheduled to arrive on August 13, 2021. Stephen Lang, Bobby Schofield, and Adam Young star, but this time, instead of Fede Alvarez at the helm, Rodo Sayagues will direct.
