Uncertainty and anxiety cloud the minds of most people in 2020. With the American political system in chaos, protesting and civil unrest continuing in the streets of major cities, and a global pandemic looming over everything, it’s obvious that people today are always wondering what the next existential threat awaits around the corner. In this sense, the release of Amy Seimetz’s newest feature, “She Dies Tomorrow,” couldn’t come at a better time, with its story of anxiety and mistrust. And if we have to endure neverending feelings of impending doom, much like the characters in the film, at least we will have the appropriate soundtrack.
Timed with the release of Seimetz’s new film, Milan Records is also set to release the soundtrack for “She Dies Tomorrow” next month, composed by veteran musical duo, Mondo Boys. The musicians have worked with some of the best filmmakers today, including Ridley Scott and Steven Soderbergh, and they will now lend their services to the upcoming indie thriller from NEON.
And in honor of the soundtrack being released soon, we are thrilled to give our readers an early listen to one of the tracks, “Le Portail Ouvre,” which Mondo Boys says is inspired by the stylistic visuals of the film.
“’Le Portail Ouvre’ begins with flashes of ‘Mozart’s Requiem’ – a distant choir, twisted and thrown around as our cue starts to emerge,” explained Mondo Boys. “The music resembles a recurring theme in the story but actually the chords and melody are totally new. We were inspired by the psychedelic ‘through the microscope’ visuals that cinematographer Jay Keitel and writer-director Amy Seimetz came up with for this scene and let the music be a totally new melody. We were tempted to turn this into a song or theme of its own but this cue is one of our favorites because it just happens this once. And that out-of-nowhere newness seems appropriate for this point in the story.”
In our recent review of “She Dies Tomorrow,” we commented on Mondo Boys’ score for the feature, which adds “a titanic throbbing that sounds like atonal techno build stripped bare” to a film that is already “mysterious and abstract.”
As mentioned, the soundtrack for “She Dies Tomorrow” is set to be released by Milan Records on August 7, with preorders beginning on July 31. And obviously, if you’re a fan of this music, you should check out Seimetz’s film of the same name, which also opens on July 31 in select theaters and on August 7 on VOD, courtesy of NEON.
