Disney’s Q1 FY20 Earnings Results Webcast took place today and this means Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed details of the future of “Star Wars” which seems somewhat up in the air given that the Skywalker Saga just ended with ‘Rise Of Skywalker’ and no new films have been announced (there’s a December 2022 release with an untitled “Star Wars” film’s name on it, but it’s unclear if Lucasfilm will make that date).
As expected, Iger didn’t mention the films much and explained, as is known, that “Star Wars” will “take a bit of a hiatus in terms of theatrical releases.” Iger than told investors what seems already clear to audiences, but in case you’re wondering: “The priority in the next few years is television,” Iger said.
More importantly, Iger revealed that more ‘Mandalorian’ could be coming, but in a way you might not expect. While he confirmed that season two of the ‘Mandalorian’ series will arrive in October 2020, but that Lucasfilm is exploring “the possibility of infusing [‘The Mandalorian’] with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”
In short, we could see a ‘Mandalorian’ spin-off series from one of the more popular supporting characters on the show or supporting characters that have yet to be introduced. Who could those characters be? Gina Carano’s rebel shock trooper-turned-mercenary? Carl Weather’s bounty hunter guild leader character? Who’s to say right now and who knows what’s being planned in season two other than the continuing story of the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.

As for the rest of that future on television. Iger noted that Lucasfilm has two other “Star Wars” show in various stages of development, including the untitled “Rogue One” prequel featuring Cassian Andor, a Rebel captain played by Diego Luna in that movie and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series featuring Ewan McGregor. There is, of course, a whole wing of animated “Star Wars” shows that Iger did not mention either like ‘Clone Wars’ which is coming to Disney+ in February.

The ‘Obi-Wan’ show made headlines around the globe recently when it was rumored to be canceled, and then revealed that the production was being put on hold while the scripts were being thrown out and effectively rewritten. None of those shows are scheduled yet, but Cassian Andor is said to be shooting this year and could arrive in 2021. Given the Obi-Wan delay and getting those script in order and to the liking of Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy, it’s really too early to tell right now.
