Ricky Gervais Insists He’s Hosting The Golden Globes For ‘The Very Last Time’

In news that will bring joy to some viewers and tears to others, Ricky Gervais is officially hosting the Golden Globes again. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC and Dick Clark Productions announced the Gervais will host the 77th Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 5. He insists his fifth time as emcee will be his last.

In a statement, Gervais remarked, “Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment, noted, “There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage. His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated. It is sure to make for an unexpected evening. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.”

HFPA president Lorenzo Soria added, “When Ricky Gervais is at the helm of the Golden Globes Awards, we can always expect the unexpected. We’re excited to see it all unfold on Jan. 5!”

Gervais hosted the Globes from 2010-12 and returned for a fourth time in 2016.  He was the first host since 1995 and was followed by the duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who delivered histroic ratings and critical acclaim. NBC talent Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers followed with Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg knocking it out of the park last year.

Gervais created the British version of “The Office” and has won three Golden Globes, two Emmy Awards and seven BAFTA Awards.  The HFPA’s press release noted that he’s “considered the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin.”

Sure.

On that note, we’re going to keep Gervais to his word that this is the utter and final time he’s hosting.

The 77th Golden Globes will be broadcast live on NBC on Sunday, January 5 beginning at 8 PM ET, 5 PM PT.
