When you have an acting duo like Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones tear it up on screen in an Oscar-winning film such as “The Theory of Everything” (where the former won the Oscar and the latter was nominated), then you do whatever you can to put them back on screen together. And sadly, since a sequel to ‘Everything’ doesn’t seem to be in the cards, Amazon Studios did the next best thing — put the two folks in a hot air balloon in the new film “The Aeronauts.”
As seen in the UK trailer for “The Aeronauts,” Redmayne plays a 19th-century meteorologist that has the crazy idea that if you study the atmosphere, you might actually be able to predict the weather. He employs a feisty hot air balloon pilot (Jones) to help him achieve never-before-reached heights in the vessel to help him prove his doubters wrong and allow for the pilot to prove that women are just as capable as men.

Joining Redmayne and Jones in the cast are Phoebe Fox, Himesh Patel, Vincent Perez, and Anne Reid. The film is written by Jack Thorne and directed by Tom Harper. The director is probably best known for his breakout film “Wild Rose,” as well as TV projects like “Peaky Blinders” and “War & Peace.”
“The Aeronauts” arrives in theaters on December 6.
Here’s the synopsis:
Set in 1862 and inspired by true events, The Aeronauts follows wealthy young widow Amelia Wren (Jones) and headstrong scientist James Glaisher (Redmayne), as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. This is a journey to the very edge of existence, where the air is thin and the chances of survival are slim. As their perilous ascent reveals their true selves, this unlikely pair discover things about each other – and themselves – that helps each of them find their place in the world they have left behind.
