After watching his good pal Kevin Smith turn a $20,000 black and white indie film into a 25-year Hollywood career, you had to imagine that sooner or later actor Jason Mewes would try his hand at directing. And now, with the upcoming film “Madness in the Method,” he does just that.
And despite the film’s fairly serious meta-narrative, following Jason Mewes (played by Mewes, natch) as he attempts to shed his stoner buddy persona for a more serious acting career, the new trailer for “Madness in the Method” clearly shows that the filmmaker is ultimately interested in having a good time.
Much like Smith, Mewes also flexes his showbiz muscle by filling out his supporting cast with some well-known actors, all turning in outrageously over-the-top performances. You have a flamboyant Danny Trejo, always-angry Vinnie Jones, witty-but-cutting Stan Lee, and hockey jersey-wearing Kevin Smith (doing his best Kevin Smith impression). In addition, there are appearances from Teri Hatcher, Casper Van Dien, Dean Cain, and Gina Carano. And for those View Askewniverse fans out there, yes, that was “Clerks” star Brian O’Halloran.
If you’re watching the trailer and hoping this was yet another ‘Jay and Silent Bob’ film, then you’re obviously out of luck. That being said, Smith and Mewes are teaming up again for the upcoming “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,” which is expected to be released in the months to come.
The film is set to premiere in select theaters and On Demand on August 2. However, if you’re going to this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, you can catch a sneak peek at “Madness in the Method” while there. Clearly, that’s going to be one of the more hyped audiences you’ll find.
