It’s been almost four years since Charlie Kaufman last released a film that he directed (2015’s “Anomalisa”). And in that time, the only real output we’ve had from the filmmaker is a writing credit on the troubled production of YA adaptation “Chaos Walking.” So yeah, film fans are aching to see what Kaufman has up his sleeve for his next feature, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” While the film still is a ways off, the full picture is starting to become a bit clearer.
Variety reports that the main cast for Kaufman’s next feature is coming together, with Toni Collette, Jessie Buckley, and David Thewlis have joined star Jesse Plemons in the film. “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by author Ian Reid. The film follows Jake (Plemons) as he travels with his girlfriend (Buckley) to visit his parents. However, his girlfriend is thinking about ending the relationship. And before she’s able to do that, Jake leaves her stranded and craziness ensues.
Now, if you’ve been following the news surrounding Kaufman’s film, you’re probably noticing one major name being left out – Brie Larson.
Back in December, it was reported that Larson was signed on to co-star in “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” playing the girlfriend character. However, there’s no mention of her in the Variety report, and it’s clear that Jessie Buckley has taken over the girlfriend character.

We’re not trying to say anything about Buckley’s acting ability, but it’s interesting that the film lost Larson, who is one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now, after her fairly recent Oscar win and the massive “Captain Marvel” success. Maybe we’ll find out the reasons for the switch later on.
There’s no expected release date for the film. However, as is normally the case when casting begins to come together, you can expect that production should begin shortly on the film.
