Got a Tip?

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Trailer: Ellen Page & Mary J. Blige Star In Netflix’s Subversive Superhero Series

Yes, it’s 2019 and it would appear that there’s a new superhero TV series around every corner. But Netflix is hoping that “The Umbrella Academy” brings something unique to the idea of superheroes that will separate it from all those Marvel TV shows and whatever the hell is on CW.

As seen in the new trailer, “The Umbrella Academy” tells the story of six kids that were born of mysterious circumstances and adopted by an older gentleman that wanted to use them as the world’s first superhero team. Think “X-Men,” but with a heavy dose of ‘80s nostalgia. Fast forward almost two decades and the Academy is without its patriarch and the kids are now disgruntled 20-somethings that are given a vision that the world is going to end in 8 days.

The superhero series stars Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, Cameron Britton, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Colm Feore, Adam Godley, John Magaro, Ashley Madekwe, and Kate Walsh.

“The Umbrella Academy” debuts on Netflix on February 15.

Here’s the synopsis:

On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse. The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by Universal Cable Productions for Netflix, with Steve Blackman serving as executive producer and showrunner, and additional EPs Jeff F. King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, Gerard Way, and Gabriel Bá.
