The Coen Brothers make unique films. The way they play with tone, the odd characters, and the unique story structures have all been hallmarks of the filmmakers’ filmography. And so far, it appears that “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” might be the duo’s most unique film to date.
In the latest trailer for ‘Buster Scruggs,’ it’s apparent that Joel and Ethan Cohen have pulled out all the stops to deliver a film that at once feels new, but yet also a Coen Brothers film. ‘Buster Scruggs’ is an anthology film that tells six separate stories (to varying degrees of success, if you believe our review), starring some of the biggest names around, including James Franco, Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson, Tim Blake Nelson, and yes, Tom Waits.

Now, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trailer isn’t any footage from the film, it’s the very, very end with the release date. You see, ‘Buster Scruggs’ is one of the upcoming Netflix films that are lucky enough to get an exclusive limited theatrical run before the Netflix streaming service premiere. That’s right, interested film fans (that are lucky enough to live in one of the markets getting the film) will have the opportunity to watch a Netflix Original film over a week before it hits the streaming service in a theater.
This new release strategy, if successful, could be the beginning of Netflix’s new paradigm to attract filmmakers to the streaming platform. We’ll just have to see if audiences are willing to pay to see the film in theaters instead of waiting a week or so and watching it from their home.
