Got a Tip?

John Goodman, Danny McBride & Adam Devine Play Televangelists In New HBO Comedy Series From Jody Hill

HBO is getting back in the Jody Hill and Danny McBride business with a new series titled “The Righteous Gemstones.” And they’re bringing Adam Devine and John Goodman along for the ride to tell the story of a family of televangelists.

According to Deadline, HBO has put in a series order for ‘Gemstones.’ As you might expect from a Hill/McBride venture, even though the series is about televangelists, it’s far from faith-based. ‘Gemstones’ tells the story of a family of televangelists that have a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. Oh yeah, and they do it all in the name of Lord Jesus Christ.

Danny McBride is handling writing and directing duties, as well as producing alongside his regular compatriots Hill and David Gordon Green. McBride and Green have been in the headlines lately for their most recent venture, the upcoming highly-anticipated “Halloween” reboot. Of course, unlike that film, “The Righteous Gemstones” is firmly in the half-hour comedy sphere. Hill and McBride have teamed up on two popular HBO series to date, with “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals.”

McBride plays Jesse Gemstone, the eldest son of Goodman’s Eli Gemstone and the next in line for the televangelist crown held by his father. Apparently, Jesse is also a bit of a maverick, as he follows in his dad’s footsteps but plans on blazing his own trail in ministry, as he expands it for a more modern audience. Adam Devine is set to play Kelvin Gemstone, the youngest son described as the “edgy one.” Edi Patterson, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Tim Baltz, and Greg Alan Williams round out the cast.

No word on a release date, but “The Righteous Gemstones” is safe to expect in the first part of 2019, as HBO makes good on its plans to expand and grow with more original content, as the network attempts to keep up with Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu.
