Yesterday, we talked about how some of the smaller films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival could potentially be lost in the shuffle as this year’s event is dominated by the sheer amount of star power on display. We already knew that some of the biggest names in filmmaking will have debuts at TIFF this year, with awards contenders being presented left and right. But even a couple week’s before TIFF kicks off, the fest is still adding some big names to the program.
Today, TIFF announced that the highly anticipated “Vox Lux,” starring Natalie Portman, and “Greta,” starring Isabelle Huppert and Chloë Grace Moretz, have been added to the Special Presentations program this year. “Greta,” which tells the story of a young New York woman named who strikes up an unlikely friendship with an enigmatic widow named Greta, comes from acclaimed filmmaker Neil Jordan and will have its world premiere at this year’s TIFF.
Not to be outdone, “Vox Lux,” the upcoming musical drama from filmmaker Brady Corbet, will have its North American premiere at the event, after its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The Natalie Portman film has a lot of buzz and also stars Jude Law.
“These are two films that explore nuanced narratives with exceptional leading women,” said Kerri Craddock, Director of Festival Programming at TIFF. “’Greta’ and ‘Vox Lux’ both offer strong directorial visions, rich performances, and engaging stories. They complete the package of the Special Presentations programme.”
The 2018 Toronto International Film Festival kicks off on September 6.
