Warner Bros. has already done it with the Flash. The studio has also kind of done it with Batman. And now, it appears that Supergirl is next on the list to have a feature film, as well as a TV series in development at the same time.
According to Deadline, WB is currently working on bringing “Supergirl” to the big screen. The film, which will be completely separate from the current CW hit TV series, will be penned by Oren Uziel. The writer is best known for his work on “22 Jump Street” and “The Cloverfield Paradox.” However, he’s also writing the script for the upcoming “Mortal Kombat” reboot, as well as the “Sonic the Hedgehog” feature film.
“Supergirl” will tell the story of Kara Zor-El, the Kryptonian cousin of Kal-El, aka Superman, and one of the few survivors of the doomed planet. She comes to Earth and adopts the name Kara Danvers and begins to fight crime alongside her more famous cousin. As far as powers go, she’s basically just Superman, but a little less powerful.
As mentioned, the film comes on the heels of a popular TV iteration of the character from producer Greg Berlanti and star Melissa Benoist. However, the TV series isn’t the first time the character has been adapted for live-action. Back in 1984, the character was brought to life on the big screen, after the success of Richard Donner’s “Superman,” in a box office bomb starring Faye Dunaway and Helen Slater.
There’s also no word on how “Supergirl” might fit into the current state of the DCEU, or whatever it’s called nowadays. Obviously, this would be a good project to help relaunch Henry Cavill’s Superman, but it could also be seen as a solo franchise, a la Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker.” Either way, the film now joins the myriad of unannounced feature films from WB that feature DC characters. So, at this point, it’s a crapshoot on whether or not it sees the light of day.
Deadline also reports that if the film does move forward past the script phase, WB will likely look at a female director to helm the project.
