It’s been a while since we heard anything about Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of “Charlie’s Angels.” Back in September of last year, reports surfaced that Kristen Stewart and “Black Panther” star Lupita Nyong’o were being eyed as leads in the film, but there was never any official announcement. Well, apparently we had half of that right.
Variety is reporting that Stewart is indeed one of the titular Angels, alongside actresses Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. Banks, of course, will play the character Bosley, who is the liaison between Charlie and his trio of badasses.
As mentioned, Banks is intimately involved in the production of the film, serving as co-writer, director, and star. “’Charlie’s Angels,’ for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the ’70s,” Banks said. “This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
Stewart is probably best known to the masses as the star of the “Twilight” franchise, however, if you’re a reader of The Playlist, you probably know her from the variety of amazing roles she’s taken since then, winning awards for her recent performances in “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Personal Shopper.” She has been a film festival darling recently but is now going back to the world of big-budget filmmaking.
She is joined by Naomi Scott, who is a star on the rise, seen most recently in the “Power Rangers” reboot film as the Pink Ranger, but will probably have a much bigger impact as Jasmine in the upcoming live-action “Aladdin” for Disney. Balinska, on the other hand, hasn’t really had her chance at big-budget films. She’s probably best known in her native England in series like “Casualty” and “Midsomer Murders.” “Charlie’s Angels” will no doubt be her biggest work to date.
“Charlie’s Angels” is scheduled to be released September 27, 2019.
