We’re stuck in this weird limbo waiting for “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” Months ago, we started the marketing blitz with a feature in magazines and interviews with cast members, and we all assumed that a trailer was around the corner, due to the fall release date. Then, out of nowhere, Fox delayed the film’s release until February, and we’re left wondering what’s going on.
It appears that the level of confusion seems to be affecting at least one member of the cast, as well. We have heard reports that the delayed release came about when the studio realized they wanted to do more extensive reshoots, but couldn’t get the cast together until later in the year, which made the release date impossible. But according to Sophie Turner, who plays the titular Dark Phoenix in the film, she’s not exactly sure what those reshoots might encompass.
“I think it’s just a few bits and bobs, reshoot-wise,” Turner said (via Digital Spy). “To be honest, I don’t even know what we’re reshooting at the moment. So I couldn’t really tell you much about that one.”
She did say that she’s happy with the change in release, specifically due to February’s track-record of success for superhero films. “All I know is that I’ll be back in Montreal at some point soon, and that the Valentine’s Day release date is quite a positive thing, because ‘Black Panther’ got released on Valentine’s Day. So we’re keeping positive about it,” she continued.
Of course, Turner is leaving out another big film that is even more relevant, “Deadpool.” That film, which is part of the same pseudo-linked “X-Men” universe (continuity is a bit of a mess at this point, opened to a massive box office total in February of 2016. Fox is clearly hoping to capitalize on the lack of big competition that month for their latest “X-Men” outing.
At the end of the day, Turner is happy with the direction of ‘Dark Phoenix,’ and thinks the film is incredibly different than the disappointing ‘Apocalypse.’ “This movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded,” she said. “There are, of course, those supernatural elements, but this one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero.”
Turner continued, “So it’s all wrapped up into one, and it’s a movie about struggle and abandonment and not knowing yourself. Yeah, an internal struggling. It’s so, so interesting. It’s such a departure from the last movie.”
“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” is currently scheduled for release on February 14, 2019.
Turner is a good actress, it’s too bad she boarded the “X-Men” ship just as it was starting to sink.
