Got a Tip?

‘Luke Cage’ Season 2 Trailer: Harlem’s Hero Is Back, But Getting Brutal With His Enemies

Marvel’s TV shows have been pretty hit and miss. For every “Jessica Jones” or “Legion” you get an “Iron Fist” or “Inhumans.” But somewhere in the middle, you get a show like “Luke Cage.”

Season one premiered to largely positive reviews in 2016 but suffered from the same too many episodes problem Marvel’s Netflix shows keep having. Showrunner Cero Hodari Coker seems confident that the new season aims to maintain the “bulletproof dopeness” of season one. That glowing endorsement matched with the synopsis is definitely enough to get me hyped for it.

After clearing his name, Luke Cage has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain.

It was revealed last July that Lucy Liu directed the premiere episode and the team had nothing but praise for her vision. Coker said that “she brings the same buoyant intensity, deft humor, and singular focus to her directing,” and that “her enthusiasm is infectious.” Hopefully, the new season will be much better than the last time we saw Luke Cage. He appeared in last year’s “Jessica Jones”/ “Iron Fist”/ “Daredevil”/ “Luke Cage” Marvel Netflix crossover bonanza “The Defenders.” But we try to forget that the “moderately watchable” show ever happened.

Familiar faces Mike Colter, Simone Missick, Rosario Dawson, Alfre Woodard, Theo Rossi, Mustafa Shakir, and Gabrielle Dennis will all be returning. Season two will also see the return of a few notable guests in Thomas Q. Jones, Reg E. Cathey, and Finn Jones.

All episodes of the second season of “Luke Cage” will premiere on Netflix on June 22.
