Got a Tip?

‘The Cloverfield Paradox,’ ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Trailer, ‘Black Panther’ & More! [Podcast]

Welcome to another edition of The Playlist Podcast, a discussion about film news and other film and television related items.

It’s been a minute since Rodrigo Perez and I last stepped onto the mic, and for that, we find ourselves meandering through a myriad of topics that are on the forefronts of our minds. We start with the impromptu release of “The Cloverfield Paradox,” and how the wind got knocked out of the hype sails real quick (because, frankly, the finished product is mostly forgettable, and will forever be remembered for its marketing tactics). This leads us into another discussion about the Netflix model, and that despite the great films they have put out (“Okja,” “Mudbound,” and “The Meyerowitz Stories“), they don’t want to be known as the service who picks up studio’s table scraps, much like how LucasFilm doesn’t want to be known as the production company who fires their directors.

Speaking of firing directors, we move into the trailer for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” We give some reactions, but mostly bafflement that “Deadpool 2” moved up one week before it, with the assurance that ‘Solo’ would move to a mid-December slot. Nope, it’s still apparently coming out on Memorial Day weekend.

Finally, we finish out the episode with some box office stats over the holidays (really, could anyone have predicted just how much “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” would dominate?), and end with some preliminary thoughts on Ryan Coogler‘s upcoming “Black Panther.” (Read our full thoughts in our review).
