Gareth Edwards Explains The “Multiple Meanings” Behind The Title ‘Rogue One’

In a few months, the internet will (hopefully) go into spoiler lockdown like it (mostly) did for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” when franchise spinoff “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” arrives in cinemas. Until then, Disney, Lucasfilm, the cast, and director Gareth Edwards will continue to parcel out bite sized morsels of information, while keeping the bigger meal of the movie under wraps. But if you’ve been wondering all this time what ‘Rogue One’ actually means, well, there’s a few explanations.

” ‘Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent, but this is the first film that’s gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the ‘rogue’ one, you know?” Edwards told Empire, noting that the Rogue Squadron was formed following the Battle Of Yavin, which resulted in the destruction of the Death Star in “Star Wars” (this movie will be a prequel to those events).

“It’s kind of describing her as well in a similar way,” he adding, referring to the film’s lead character Jyn Erso. “It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice.”

Basically, it seems to mean everything and nothing, and as a name that’s purposefully vague, I have to say, it still sounds pretty cool.
