A sequel has already been announced, an animated series is in the works and if everything goes according to plan, Marvel‘s "Guardians Of The Galaxy" will open huge this weekend. While a film involving obscure "cosmic" characters once seemed risky, Marvel has proven it can pretty much market anything by this point, and now it’s not a question whether ‘Guardians’ will open big, but by how much. And yet, speaking to SuperHeroHype at Comic-Con, director James Gunn explained why he still thinks you should root for his movie.
"Well, I think we are the underdog. I think the story of the ‘Guardians,’ we feel it’s the story of us: me, Chris, Zoe, Dave Bautista, we all basically feel like outcasts and we banded together to do this thing that we really put our hearts into and we did the best we could with. So yeah, I think we feel like outcasts for sure," Gunn said. "I mean, Chris, he was a big chubby guy just two years ago. Dave is a wrestler who nobody takes seriously. Zoe is a person of color who’s had to fight insurmountable odds her entire career as not only a person of color but a female. Then, there’s me, who was making a $3 million superhero movie about people getting their heads blown off just a couple years ago."
Clearly, Gunn made the most of the opportunity to go from underdog to top dog when he got his shot. The distinct style he brings to ‘Guardians’ come through loud and clear in the clip below. In case you didn’t know, the movie opens this Friday, August 1st.
the characters are outcasts not the actors
You could argue that they are outcasts. Though Zoe Saldana has been in Avatar the highest grossing film of all time and the Star Trek reboot so she is hardly an outcast.
