Watch: Al Pacino Is Down & Out In The First Trailer For David Gordon Green’s ‘Manglehorn’

Manglehorn

It’s almost as if indie filmmaker David Gordon Green has been checking items off his bucket list. In 2012 he finally worked with Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch in “Prince Avalanche” (two actors he had meant to collaborate with in the past) and then he started going after some big fish. 2014 you’ve got Nicolas Cage in the underrated “Joe (which features a nice, almost uncharacteristically subtle Nic Cage performance) and this year he’s hooked Al Pacino for his latest picture, “Manglehorn” (and up next is a George Clooney-produced movie starring Sandra Bullock). Pacino seems more than game these days too as he’s working with Harmony Korine next, and it appears that Green caught him at the perfect point in time.

So how does Green imagine Al Pacino? As a down and out former criminal who is looking for a bit of redemption. In “Manglehorn,” Pacino plays a locksmith leading a rather quiet life, but always thinking about the one that got away (here’s our review from the Venice Film Festival last year). Suddenly, he’s got a second chance at love, but a dark past also haunts him. Here’s the official synopsis.

Reclusive small town locksmith A.J. Manglehorn has never recovered from losing the love of his life, Clara. Fixated on her memory, he feels closer to his beloved cat than the people around him. Still, he forges on with his tenuous human connections, maintaining intermittent contact with his son and taking misplaced pride in a former protégé gone astray, and establishing a cautious friendship with a kind woman from the local bank. As this solitary man approaches the possibility of new love, he finds himself at a crossroads between staying mired in the past and embracing the present.

“Manglehorn” stars Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine (the Pacino connection was surely made here), and Chris Messina. Another plus? The score was written by Explosions In The Sky and David Wingo who composed the awesome score for Green’s “Prince Avalanche” (which ranked high on our Best Scores Of 2013 feature). The movie hits theaters via IFC Films on June 19. Watch the first trailer below and let us know what you think. [via First Showing]
