Michael Bay Explains Why He Didn’t Cast An A-List Star For ’13 Hours’

Michael Bay 13 HoursMichael Bay will soon return to doing what he does best, at least lately: making toys smash up against each other real good. But before that, he’s knocked out a Serious Movie that’s Based On A True Story, but don’t fret, there’s still lots of action. That said, the filmmaker did strive to make something with integrity and honesty around an event that still brings up a lot of political controversy: the September 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya on a U.S. diplomatic compound. "13 Hours" tells that story, and as he related recently to THR, Bay didn’t want name brand actors for the picture, and he explains why he made that decision.

"A very big superstar was interested in doing this movie. I met with that person and because it’s a true story I wanted it to be really, really present for the audience, very visceral. It would be very different with a movie star," the director said. "[Producer] Jerry Bruckheimer told me don’t go with the movie star. Go with people that are great actors and that have no baggage and it can be a much more effective movie. I’m really glad I went with this cast."

And thus, the ensemble’s most recognizable face is arguably "The Office" star John Krasinski, with Pablo Schreiber, Toby Stephens, David Giuntoli, James Badge Dale, Max Martini, and David Costabile rounding things out. As for the content of the picture, Bay stresses he won’t take a political stance, and will show "both sides" of the situation.

"13 Hours" opens on January 15, 2016, but I’m kinda curious if Paramount will try any kind of awards play with the picture. Thoughts? Sound off below.

  1. BLACK HAWK DOWN, which is the obvious influence for this, was originally supposed to open early in 2002, but got bumped to the holidays in 2001. If this film is good I\’m sure they\’ll try that here too.
