Admission: I have not watched a single episode of "Black Mirror," and thus, haven’t really known what all the chatter is about. That said, plenty of The Playlist team are big fans and this morning’s news is causing some ripples of excitement around the coffeemaker.
Netflix has announced they’ll be delivering twelve new episodes of the show. Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones are back to produce the new chapters in the anthology series which has gained quite a following. Production will begin this fall, and while no premiere date has been announced, Netflix will have the worldwide rights except for the UK and Ireland where release plans are still being figured out.
So good news for those who thought the show might be gone. Check out the teaser below followed by the press release. No word yet if the new episodes will have further revelations about British PM David Cameron….
Beverly Hills, Calif., September 25, 2015 — Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, will bring viewers twelve all-new episodes of Charlie Brooker’s critically acclaimed, mind-bending anthology series Black Mirror.
Netflix has commissioned House of Tomorrow to produce the twelve new episodes as a Netflix original series. House of Tomorrow’s Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who executive produced the first seven episodes of the series, will continue to serve as executive producers and showrunners for the new episodes. Brooker has commenced writing the new episodes, which are scheduled to begin production in late 2015 from the series’ production base in the UK.
"It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true,” said Brooker.
“Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. We’re tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President, original content, Netflix.
Premiere date and episode rollout will be announced at a later date. The series will premiere internationally in all Netflix territories outside the UK and Ireland, where plans are still being determined.
Created and written by Brooker, Black Mirror taps into our collective unease with the modern world and each stand-alone episode is a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us. The series has been recognized with an international Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, a Rose D’Or and been nominated for a Bafta® award.
It\’s great that full transparency is met with such class. Good community.
Oh relax, children. there\’s a million pieces of content out there. Quiz any film writer out there and they\’ll all readily admit that many things slip through the cracks. You think Manhola Dargis has seen everything on TV when she\’s focused on film? You think Alan Sepinwall has seen every important movie of 2015? Grow-up
How do you sleep in the night?
Don\’t you know that Kevin has sold out his soul the moment we, sorry, he left blogspot? Aw.
It\’s fine that you have not seen the series, but the problem comes "No word yet if the new episodes will have further revelations about British PM David Cameron…." line. The first episode that you are alluding doesn\’t deal with Camaron, but with just a generic Prime Minister. The pig bits are just random coincidence. The show\’s ambition lies beyond exposing a politician.
Love Black Mirror but please have the tv gods at Netflix pickup Utopia and do a Season 3 now that David Fincher is not doing an American version. Pretty please!
