“I Don’t Totally Disagree With Him”: Colin Trevorrow Responds To Joss Whedon’s ‘Jurassic World’ Criticism

Jurassic WorldEarlier this year, Joss Whedon set the internet alight, and it had nothing to do with "Avengers: Age Of Ultron." After the first clip from "Jurassic World" was released, showing the film’s leads Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard engaging in some painful banter, Whedon took to Twitter and declared the sequence was "70’s era sexist." And while Whedon later said what he did was "bad form," everyone around the movie has largely remained quiet about the critique, but with the blockbuster stomping into cinemas next week, director Colin Trevorrow has responded, and he’s pretty reflective about it all.

“I wasn’t bothered by what he said about the movie and, to be honest, I don’t totally disagree with him,” the director told Bad Taste, though like many, he was puzzled why the studio chose such an odd clip to be the first one to promote the movie.

“I wonder why [Universal] chose a clip like that, that shows an isolated situation within a movie that has an internal logic. That starts with characters that are almost archetypes, stereotypes that are deconstructed as the story progresses," he said. "The real protagonist of the movie is Claire and we embrace her femininity in the story’s progression. There’s no need for a female character that does things like a male character, that’s not what makes interesting female characters in my view. Bryce and I have talked a lot about these concepts and aspects of his character.”

Meanwhile, Howard also questions Universal‘s marketing, and hopes Whedon sees how her character is ultimately portrayed in the picture. “He’s a hero, he’s an amazing guy and a champion for women in this industry," she told Huffington Post. "Marketing for a film is tricky because you release stuff without context. Of course there was a part of me being such a fan of him that was like, ‘Nooooo!’ Especially because when you see the movie it’s not at all like that, but we make movies and it’s out there for public opinion and I hope he likes the movie!”

  1. Whedon\’s supposed to be this progressive, pro-feminist, equal rights/blah blah blah yakety-shmakety type, yet no one so much as blinks an eye when the best descriptor he can come up with to summarize Quicksilver is that he\’s a "pussyhound". "Progressive" my ass.

  2. I can see where Joss probably regrets his words, in that he posted a "reaction" to the world based on a clip out of context. Had is tweet come after a screening, I doubt he would have retracted. However, the problem with hollywood is that too often female writers are still getting their feet when it comes to writing action films. When they do figure out the craft, we\’ll get Jim Cameron worthy female characters in amazing action films. I am looking forward to that day…

  3. This hyper sensitivity, always attacking males is weak and pathetic. We are all individuals. Feminazism is destroying society and bring back an us vs them mentality. It\’s worse than racism because it\’s "acceptable" to point the finger at someone for being a man. This trend is ending soon, and will be remembered as an embarrassing time for women.
