While there are some feminists who will argue that pornography can be empowering, Gloria Steinem isn't one of them. The pioneering women's rights activist was an important footnote in the life and saga of "Deep Throat" actress Linda Lovelace, and in the upcoming biopic, she'll make a brief appearance with a big star filling her shoes.
Variety reports that Demi Moore — experiencing a renaissance of sorts thanks to roles in "Another Happy Day" and "Margin Call" — will play Steinem in a cameo role in "Lovelace." The founder of Ms. Magazine was a source of support and somewhat of a voice for Lovelace. Steinem penned the article "The Real Linda Lovelace" which accused Lovelace's husband, Chuck Traynor, of perpetuating the story that the porn actress "loved to be sexually used and humiliated." Steinem also wrote the introduction to Lovelace's memoir "Out Of Bondage," and also appeared at the press conference for her first book, "Ordeal."
But in what is the most eyebrow raising bit of casting, little Seth Cohen (aka Adam Brody) has landed the role of Harry Reems, the infamous co-star of "Deep Throat." His participation in the movie caused him to be prosecuted by the FBI on charges of conspiring to distribute obscenity across state lines. The conviction was later overturned on appeal. Also making time for an appearance will be Eric Roberts as Nat Laurendi, a lie detector expert who interviews Lovelace at the request of her publisher.
The film from "Howl" directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman is putting togther a pretty solid cast with Amanda Seyfried in the title role, Peter Sarsgaard as her husband, with Juno Temple, Sharon Stone, Wes Bentley, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick and James Franco (as Hugh Hefner) rounding out the cast. Not bad. The film is currently in front of cameras.
