Barring die hard fans of Kenneth Branagh TV show "Wallander," a year ago, not many could have picked Tom Hiddleston out of a line-up. But having been selected by Branagh to play Loki in "Thor," the young British actor's gone from strength to strength; playing opposite Rachel Weisz in Terence Davies' "The Deep Blue Sea," cropping up among the ensemble cast of Steven Spielberg's "War Horse" and, in a few short months, reprising Loki as the villian in the hotly anticipated superhero team-up flick "The Avengers."
And it's a measure of the actors' fast-rising status that, having wrapped a TV version of "Henry V," tied to the London Olympics, he's now stepping in for one of the hottest stars around, in the latest film from indie legend Jim Jarmusch. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hiddleston has joined the cast of the director's upcoming vampire tale, which now has an official title; "Only Lovers Left Alive," replacing Michael Fassbender in the cast.
When we spoke to the Irish-German actor last year, Fassbender said regarding the Jarmusch film, his involvement in which was announced during Cannes last year, that he "wasn't sure what's going on there, to be honest," and clearly things didn't shape up, as the actor's nowhere to be seen in THR's story on the film. Still locked in, however, are Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt and Tilda Swinton, (the latter two coming straight from Bong Joon-Ho's "Snow Piercer") all of whom were previously linked to the project.
While we're totally bored of vampire movies at this point, we're sure that Jarmusch will have something new to bring to the genre for his film, described as 'an unusual love story' between two bloodsuckers. German company Pandora Films are backing the project, and the film will shoot in Western Germany later in the year. Our big question at this point: is the title a tribute to punk supergroup Wanderers' 1981 concept album of the same name?…
Fassy has pick of the litter. I don't blame him for passing on what is sure to be a terrible vampire flick. Jim Jarmusch is a bad director. Very very bad.
According to imdb this is old news, Hiddleston was among the cast for a while on their site. I'm glad he replaced Fassy, i'm not too keen on that bloke. I don't mind the guy but i'd rather see Tom in such class film, that's fer sure. The only thing that sucks is that this film will be out in 2013, it would be a great addition to the 2012 lineup.
Hope Jarmusch does for the Vampire sub-genre what he did for the Western genre with "Dead Man".
Pedantic First Comment! The opening needs some editing. The first sentence feels like it's missing a word. Meanwhile, you also use picked to closely together. How about changing the latter 'picked' for 'chosen' in that second sentence?
Anyway, a new Jim Jarmusch film – 'Yay!'
