Continuing their downward trajectory from badass metal gods, to aging hard rock clowns, Metallica are now doing something that puts them in the same category as Justin Bieber and Katy Perry: they're making a 3D movie. The project was first announced last fall before their dreadful Lulu album with Lou Reed dropped. But it seems there is no bad idea that can keep these guys down, and now their project has a director.
"Predators" helmer Nimrod Antal is now on board to shoot the movie, which will blend the traditional concert stuff with a narrative of some kind. Considering the band already chronicled their internal strife with "Some Kind Of Monster," who knows what they'll cover here. Or maybe they'll do some kind of fictional story tied into their own music. Guess we'll have to wait and see, but not for long as this one is gearing up. A shoot is in line for August and a 2013 release is part of the plan. Leave it to Lars Ulrich to explain in the most bland terms possible, why Antal is the right guy for the job.
"I've been a fan of Nimrod's since his first Hungarian film, 'Kontroll,' showed up at Cannes in 2004 and blew everybody away," Ulrich said in a press release, while probably also looking at IMDB at the same time. "I've watched with excitement his career in Hollywood blossom over the last few years. Within five minutes of meeting him I was addicted to his enthusiasm, his take on the creative process and his 'thinking outside of the box' personality. Let's get on with it!!!"
Note to Lars: saying stuff like "thinking outside the box" went out with Napster. Anyway, we'll see how this turns out but we long gave up on Metallica doing anything of note.
